It was a celebratory mood that filled the ballroom at the Laico Regency Hotel in Nairobi on Tuesday evening. For the second time in over 40 years, Libyans got together to celebrate their 61st independence day which falls on December 24. The occasion had been scrapped during the four-decade rule of former leader, the late Muammar Gaddafi. The United Kingdom of Libya proclaimed its independence on December 24, 1951, two years after a UN General Assembly passed a resolution making it a sovereign state. The cocktail was well attended by businessmen, diplomats, and senior government officials.
