From the time Kenya got independence in 1963, progressive governments promised to tarmac the Makutano-Kithimani road that links Yatta with Mwala subcounty. Elected leaders in the two subcounties always got votes after promising residents they would prioritise the tarmacking of the 33-kilometre stretch once elected to Parliament. It was never to be. When Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua was campaigning, one of his pledges was to tarmac the road and even though he got majority of votes in the area, the locals did not believe that he would do so as they had heard the same story over the years...
