Leaders in Tseikuru district, Kitui county, have proposed a plan to save the multimillion-shilling Wikithuki irrigation scheme on the banks of River Tana. On Monday, national and county government officials, headed by Tseikuru deputy county commissioner Paul Meriyang, toured the scheme. Area MCA Kilonzo Kauthi told the Star on the phone yesterday that farmers have abandoned the scheme. “We found most of the farmers had left. We were told the management had advised them to revert to rain-fed farming in their homes,” he said.
