The Supreme Courtâs presidential annulment judgment is finally out. The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission needs to act on the irregularities and illegalities highlighted by the majority of judges.
The IEBC must move immediately to make sure these shortcomings do not recur at the rerun. Those indicted with wrongdoing should act conscientiously and take responsibility. From now on, the IEBC should devote all its energies to holding elections lawfully.
As Chief Justice Maraga said in court yesterday, the standards set by this ruling for following the Constitution and election laws must apply without fail.
Between now and the rerun in 30 days, the IEBC should alert Parliament and the national government if there is a problem that cannot be rectified before the election.
Let us see an IEBC that obeys court orders to the letter. The judges expressed their displeasure with the IEBCâs bypassing of its orders to provide access to the server and logs, which would have debunked its critics if it had followed the Constitution and the election laws.
