Three dead after police shootout with thugs

Two suspected thugs were shot dead in a botched robbery attempt along Nairobi's Kimathi street in an afternoon incident that also saw a stander-by get shot in the cross-fire. In the mid-day incident, four people were injured as police pursued the gangsters. ICC Prosecutor Fatou Bensouda has asked the Trial Chamber for permission to appeal their decision granting Deputy President William Ruto excusal from trial. THe High Court will on March 18 decide whether to terminate a robbery with violence case against former Mungiki leader Maina njenga and four others. Njenga has challenged the criminal proceedings against him by the Director of Public Prosecutions Keriako Tobiko. DPP urged to withdraw 54 cases

RIGHTS groups have written to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Keriako Tobiko asking him to review 54 cases pending against human rights activities in the country. Chairman of the National Association of Human Rights Activists Ken Wafula says some of the pending cases were framed by the police to frustrate the activists. He says human rights activists live under constant threats. Wafula said 16 activists have been threatened over their activities. He made the remarks in a press statement issued in Eldoret yesterday.
