KISUMU A baby of seven months was yesterday left with face and limb burns after an alleged suicide attempt by the mother in Manyatta estate. It is believed that Diana Atieno, 26, set the house ablaze while the child was on the couch. Neighbour Lilian Mosoti said it was the fourth time the mother had attempted suicide without success.

Spur economy, says Anyanga
MIGORI Kenya's economy will improve this year after the International Criminal Court dropped charges against President Uhuru Kenyatta, a legislator has said. “I am optimistic Uhuru will concentrate on improving the lives of Kenyans in the New Year,” Nyatike MP Edick Anyanga said. THE Lake Victoria Environmental Management Project II will buy surveillance boats for Lake Victoria and a water harvester to remove hyacinth . Kisumu police on the spot over motorcycle theft
POLICE in Kisumu town are on the spot over theft of motorcycles. A motorcycle impounded by two police officers on the Kisumu-Nairobi Highway disappeared under unclear circumstances. Migori fuel shortage now in its fourth day
Migori town has been hit by fuel shortage for the past four days. Motorists are buying the commodity in Isebania, Awendo and Rongo towns, which have also been facing fuel shortages. MP Ronald Tonui has accused Governor Isaac Rutto of issuing bouncing cheques for county projects. Tonui said the latest incident was Rutto’s Sh700,000 cheque to Motigo Secondary School for a dormitory. A county finance officer who requested anonymity, however, denied claims of fake cheques.

Tea firm polls postponed as Bomet farmers protest
Chaos marred the Kenya Tea Development Agency factory directors elections in Cheptalal zone, Bomet county. The agency ignored a court order stopping the polls. More than 300 small-scale tea farmers on Tuesday thronged Kobel tea buying centre to stop the elections. They said they read mischief in the agency defying the order barring the polls. The court issued an order stopping the elections until a case filed by one of the aspirants is heard on January 26. The poll was postponed to a later date, said regional manager Godana Ali.

Factory directors chosen in KTDA zonal elections
The Kenya Tea Development Agency on Tuesday held its annual zonal elections. Two new directors from Mamul and Litein tea factories were elected in various electoral zones in Kericho county. At Kiptewit electoral zone, Litein, newcomer Wilson Koech Langat garnered 23,276 votes. He defeated former director Samuel Cheruiyot Langat by 9,894 votes to join the Litein-Chelal factory. Unilever Tea Kenya former manager Richard Rono ran unopposed from his Chemosot electoral zone.

THE government has been urged to investigate unscrupulous officers selling relief food in Njoro. Speaking to the press in Njoro town yesterday, MP Joseph Kiuna said some government officials sell relief food meant for the poor. “I’m on the verge of requesting another batch of relief food because some people are starving in Njoro,” Kiuna said. The region experienced food shortage as a result of maize disease destroying crops. Kiuna urged farmers to grow sorghum, yam and arrow roots to enhance food security.

A witchdoctor yesterday said the gods are holding on to the body of a three-year-old boy who drowned in Arror River in November. He told residents of Ng’orng’oroi village, Marakwet West, the boy is still alive. The witchdoctor from Kaben village said the gods will release Dairus Kiplimo once they are done with him. A farmers society invaded part of Ndabibi farm in Naivasha and battled riot police. Ndibithi farmers society accused a tycoon of illegally taking the land in 1964 during President Moi’s administration.
