Mandera Highway upgrade

The government plans to tarmack the 765km Mandera-Wajir-Garissa road. Mandera governor Ali Ibrahim Roba said President Uhuru wants the highway upgraded. The road is classified as B9 by the Ministry of Roads which means it has national status. “The upgrading of the road is set to be awarded to six contractors who will be required to finish the job in six years,” said Roba, during a meeting with departmental heads in Mandera town yesterday.

Three M-Pesa outlets robbed

Armed thugs raided three Embu town M-Pesa outlets and stole money and phones. Two thieves stole four mobile phones from Samchi Telecom near Kobil Petrol station on Saturday evening. Another group stole an unknown amount from an MPesa near Uchumi Supermarket on Friday while a third group robbed another outlet near Kobil station.

Wambora to release list today

Embu governor Martin Wambora will appoint his dream team of highly educated individuals today. Speaking during the official opening of the Embu county assembly, Wambora said the cabinet will be made up of seven members excluding him and his deputy. He said the team will be expected to help him spearhead development and his legislative agenda. Wambora said about 400 people applied for the jobs. The governor, who was with Embu senator Lenny Kivuti, said he will present the dream team for approval to the county assembly to tomorrow.

Floods sweep away six bridges, livestock in Timau

Residents of Timau ward in Buuri constituency have called on the government to help them rebuild their infrastructure and farms destroyed by heavy rains at the weekend. Six bridges were damaged, more than 30 acres of farm washed away, one ox was killed and several goats are still missing. New jikos for 100,000

More than 100,000 women in Embu will receive eco-friendly jikos in the next four years in a campaign to reduce carbon dioxide. Robert Gitonga, the managing director of Climate Pact, said the project is targeting women in rural areas. He said the programme was initiated after a survey revealed that many women in rural areas use firewood contributing greatly to an increase in carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.

Muggings increase in Meru during school holidays, police have said. Imenti North police boss Tom Odero said the youth form groups and rob residents. He made the statement after the arrest of a robbery suspect. The suspect, who had stolen a mobile phone, tried to evade the police but was nabbed in the ensuing chase.

South Mugirango MP Manson Nyamweya yesterday criticised those opposing the move. “Raila’s entry to parliament is not meant for his self interest but for the good of the country,” said Nyamweya. The letter dated April 20 written by Otiende Amolo accuses Thuita for not deploying Ambassador Daniel Koikai after he was hired and trained. Floods kill 56, displace 80,000

At least 56 people have been killed and more then 85,135 displaced by the heavy rains. Statistics released by the Kenya Red Cross yesterday show that four people are missing, 19 injured while 13,042 households have been affected by floods caused by the heavy rains. Seven people have died in Upper Eastern, five are injured and 1,605 households displaced. There are no deaths in North Eastern but 2,062 households, a total of 26,558 people, have been displaced. In Central Kenya, two people have been killed, two injured and 96 households displaced...

State to decide Raila,Kalonzo security detail

Raila Odinga and former Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka will have to wait for a government directive on how many security officers they will retain after losing the March 4 polls. Head of Public Service Francis Kimemia is expected to issue a directive today after the abrupt withdrawal of armed officers deployed to guard the two. Close to 100 police officers and government vehicles assigned to Raila and Kalonzo were withdrawn a few days after President Uhuru was sworn in.
