High Court Judge George Odunga has declared the Kiambu County Finance Act, 2013 illegal. Judge Odunga ruled that the law was null and void as it was enacted without the participation of Kiambu residents. The Bill had proposed new taxes including a proposal for charges for burials in public cemeteries. Farmers would also have had to pay taxes where cultivating an acre of land attracting Sh2,000 in tax and half and quarter acres would have cost Sh1,000 and Sh500. The case challenging the Finance Act was filed by Kiambu residents through an association called Jamofastar Welfare.
