Four presidential candidates present papers to IEBC

Four presidential candidates have presented their papers to the Independent Electoral Boundaries Commission. Narc Kenya party leader Martha Karua, Eagle Alliance's flag bearer Peter Kenneth, RBK's James Ole Kiyapi and UDF's Musalia Mudavadi presented their papers to the commission at the KICC today. The process clears the four to contest for the presidency in the March 4 elections. Martha Karua who was the first candidate to submit her nomination papers said the event marks a historic occasion as it is the first time that the IEBC is running such an election and under the new constitution...

Kenya Red Cross suspends services in Dadaab after attack

The Kenya Red Cross Society (KRCS) has suspended its services in the Dadaab IFO2 East and West Refugee camps following an attack on one of its ambulances. The ambulance was attacked along the Dagahley - Dadaab on Monday afternoon road by four gunmen who shot at the vehicle injuring the KRCS personnel on board. The suspension of services by the KRCS which started over a year ago leaves the world’s largest refugee camp at a critical situation after other NGOs withdrew their services from the area following the abduction of two Medecin Sans Frontieres (MSF) staff in the camp...

A total of eight candidates have been lined up to present their nomination papers in the next two days for clearance as they seek to succeed President Kibaki in the March 4 general election. Kenya will host an international junior karate tournament in Nairobi in May. The event has so far attracted five countries including—Tanzania, Kenya, Mozambique, South Africa, Zimbabwe and Malawi. AFC Leopards have moved in to avert looming showdown between them and a top Busia club over the transfer of a player. The Kenya Premier League club yesterday agreed with Kolongolo FC over midfielder Bernard Ongoma’s terms plus the player’s mandatory and development fees. Kolongolo team manager, Peter Musumba said Ongoma has been offered a three-year contract with AFC Leopards. Customers on its new Karibu tariff will now pay 50 cents per second , but this is subject to Sh1 daily charge for subscribing to the tariff. UCHUMI Supermarket has selected JamboPay for its e-commerce platform. This follows the conclusion of a competitive selection process for e-payments services provider for the retail chain. JamboPay beat seven other electronics payments service providers who had tendered for the service. THE Central Bank sold an undisclosed amount of dollars early yesterday to support the local currency after it weakened to a new one-year low on strong importer demand for greenbacks, traders said. The shilling fell 0.4 per cent to touch an intraday low of 87.80/88.00 to the dollar, last touched on Jan. 5, 2011, when it hit 89.00. It recovered to trade at 87.50/70 at 0713 GMT after the Central Bank sold dollars, and was still being quoted at the same level at 0739 GMT. "The Central Bank came in to sell dollars again after the shilling touched 88," said a trader at one commercial bank...
