Woman denies breaking chairs, beer bottles

A 51-year-old woman appeared before a Thika court charged with malicious damage to property. Esther Muthoni was arraigned before resident magistrate Wesley Cheruiyot. Muthoni denied that on January 5 at Gatong’ora in Ruiru, she threatened to beat Stephen Njoroge then went ahead to destroy 10 plastic chairs, 12 plastic cups and 24 beer bottles, steal a KEG cylinder and Sh5,000 cash all valued at about Sh17,000. She was released on bond of Sh 50,000 and hearing set for March 18.

Supermarket man in Sh1.5m theft case

A supermarket employee was arraigned before a Thika court charged with stealing about Sh1.5 million. Kinyua Mutua, 25, appeared before resident magistrate Wesley Cheruiyot. Mutua was charged that on January 14 in Ruiru town, he stole Sh1,021,500 million from Bidii Supermarket and again on January 15, he stole Sh 455,617. He was released on a bond of Sh100,000 and the hearing set for April 2.

Lover accused of burning suitor’s house

A 30 year old woman was arraigned before a Thika court where she denied burning her suitor’s house. Beatrice Mumbi appeared before resident magistrate Wesley Cheruiyot. Mumbi denied that on December 3 at Kiairegi village, Murang'a she set on fire, a house valued at Sh900,000 belonging to Ezra Kihunya following a quarrel between them. She was remanded after failing to raise bond of Sh300,000 and the case set for hearing on April 5.

MOMBASA governor aspirant Suleiman Shahbal yesterday dismissed efforts to frustrate his bid saying he will win the seat. Speaking in a campaign rally in Likoni yesterday, Shahbal told-off UDF's Kelvin Kwena, who has asked the IEBC to disqualify him. “They have tried to stop us but we are focused on winning. They have failed to deliver but now change is coming,” he said. Kwena asked the IEBC to disqualify Shahbal saying he has been issued with two certificates by UDF and Wiper. KWALE may experience the worst food shortage this year, a drought management officer has warned. Mohamed Keinan said more than 145,000 residents are currently in need of relief food in the county. Keinan said the food shortage was caused by the poor long and short rains received in the region in the last two years. Burglars break into tourists hotel room

The police are investigating the a break-in at a Mombasa hotel room where two tourists were robbed off their belongings. Coast tourist police boss Wycliffe Sicharani yesterday said burglars broke into the room when its occupants, Paul Thomason and his wife Debbie, had gone out for a two-hour walk. A pair of binoculars, yellow fever certificates, malaria tablets, clothes and a driving license were stolen during the break-in. Sicharani said they have identified crucial leads and are closing down on the suspects.

The National Environment Management Authority has warned that Kwale residents may not benefit from their mineral resources because of illiteracy. Nema says majority of the residents don’t understand the ongoing mining and exploration processes in the county. A policeman accused of helping five suspects escape from the Embu law courts will begin his defence on February 27. The five escapees allegedly bribed Jackson Kitili to help them escape on October 14, 2011. More than 10 schools that were caught up in Isiolo’s tribal skirmishes last year performed poorly in the KCPE examination. Speaking to the press yesterday, Isiolo Knut executive secretary Dadhe Boru said the KCPE mean score had dropped from 38 to 36 points this year. A Kenya Red Cross vehicle was on Mon- day afternoon ambushed by a suspected al Shabaab militia group in Dadaab, Garissa. Speaking to the Star on phone yesterday, county commissioner Maalim Mohamed said the vehicle was heading for Dadaab town when a group of four militias sprayed it with bullets hitting one official in the leg. He said police are still pursuing the attackers whose intent was to carjack the vehicle and cross with it to Somalia. “We are following up on crucial leads,” he said.
