THE wife to exiled former Deputy AP Commandant Oku Kaunya yesterday denied claims that her husband is an ICC witness. Millicent Oku said her husband fled the country because his security was not assured. Speaking to the press in Malaba town, Oku said the rumour was baseless, and her husband has not been interrogated by the ICC. Kaunya left the country in April 2010. It was then rumoured that he would be a key witness for the ICC prosecutor over the four Kenyan suspects facing trial at The Hague. The government took Kaunya's absence from work as desertion and relieved him of his duties.

Itierio girl top in Nyanza
Iterio Girls Boarding School in Kisii county produced the top girl in Nyanza in last year’s KCPE. Elizabeth Moraa Omae scored 423 out of 500. She is the third born out of four children. Omae said her ambition is to become a doctor. Her closest competitor was Cyprene Nyamumbo who scored 415 points. Speaking to the press yesterday at the school, Omae said she hopes to join Alliance Girls School. The top girl said she was overjoyed to get 423 marks because her aim was 400. Headteacher Grace Mang’era attributed Omae’s performance to hard work, dedication team work.

KAKAMEGA governor hopeful Paul Olando on Saturday named a former Kenya Sugar Board director as his running mate. Bondo University men’s hostels razed by fire
PROPERTY worth millions of shillings went up in flames on Monday night following a fire incident. The fire burnt two men hostels at Bondo University college in Siaya county. The fire which broke out at 7.30 pm razed down two-storey buildings and burnt to ashes the students belongings. Villagers and students were unable to save the students property. They could only access the ground and first floor, because the raging fire kept them at bay. Fire fighter engines arrived an hour later from Kisumu which is about 80 kilometres away. Kisumu’s MM Shah Primary School has emerged top in Kisumu county in last year's KCPE examination. It also posted the best results in Kisumu Municipality. The school produced the fourth best student in the county. Okoth Ezra Mirimba scored 414 marks out of 500. He said he had hoped to get 420 marks, but what he got was good enough. Trans Nzoia professional caucus has praised teachers in Trans Nzoia County for a slight improvement in last year’s KCPE results. Chairman Chris Wamalwa said the County improved from position 27 last year to this year’s position 22. The caucus however said a lot has to be done to improve the area's education standards. 3 illegal fish traders held
Fisheries officers in Naivasha have arrested suspects found ferrying one tonne of undersize fish from Lake Naivasha. The three were nabbed in a matatu headed to Nairobi. According to Naivasha district fisheries officer Mathew Ngila, the trade had been going on for some time. The officers were acting on a tip-off and laid a trap that led to their arrest They will be taken to court to face illegal fishing charges.

Koigi threatens to sue Cord
Koigi wa Wamwere has threatened to sue Cord for associating his Chama cha Mwananchi with the alliance. Wamwere gave the alliance a seven-day ultimatum to apologise failure to which he will file a suit against them. Baringo schools reopen
Ten schools have been reopened after security was restored in Baringo. However, Marigat DC Saul Muyaywa yesterday said the government is still monitoring the situation in the county. A Naivasha prisoner scored 350 marks in last year's KCPE exams. Ewoi James Loitiang,33, is serving 20 years for defilement. "I want to be a better and educated person so that when I leave prison I can positively change the lives of my people in Lodwar," he said. Five public schools top Nandi KCPE list of best performers
Public schools were the top performers in last year's Kenya Certificate of Primary Education examinations in Nandi. The first five schools were from Mosop constituency. St Mathews Septonok Primary School in Kabiyet, which had 47 candidates, topped the list with a mean score of 380 marks. Kalyet Septok Primary School, with 100 candidates, was third with a mean of 372. Other best performers were AIC Teresia Primary School, which posted 377 marks and All Saints Kebulonik with 367. Iten gets Sh2bn for water
Iten town will receive Sh2 billion funding from the Belgium government to expand water and sewerage services. The town, which has more than 100,00 people, has been facing a serious water problem. "The government has negotiated for good terms for the money which will largely be a loan to be repaid within the time to be agreed on," said director of Water Services Peter Mangiti.
