Parent sues over cancelled KCPE results

FORTY-NINE candidates who sat their KCPE exam last year risk missing out on selection to national schools, a parent has said. Benjamin Kibet, who has sued the Knec on behalf of 35 parents, says Knec’s decision to cancel the results has affected their children. The candidates sat the exam at Precious Gift Schools last year. Kibet says the candidates have not been given a hearing over the alleged irregularity in Kiswahili paper. A matatu conductor was yesterday charged with assaulting a passenger for giving him an old Sh50 note. Elias Lusava, 28, denied beating up David Mwangi on Thika Road near Survey area on December 18. Nairobi principal magistrate Caro Ocharo released Lusava on Sh10,000 bail. The case will be heard on April 16. Mwangi told police that he boarded a bus from Githurai to town and paid the conductor. A 40-year-old claims assistant at the United Nations was yesterday charged with fraud and conspiring to steal a car. Eric Nyotu was accused of stealing a Sh620,000 car in Westlands, Nairobi, between November 19 and 25 last year. Nyotu was also charged with fraudulently obtaining Sh620,000 from James Ndiema on November 25. Nyotu denied the charges before Kibera chief magistrate Judith Wanjala. Party chief denies theft of Sh1.9m

THE national treasurer of Chama Cha Uzalendo party was yesterday charged with stealing more than Sh1.9 million from the party. Veronica Mativo is also charged with forging a cheque from Commercial Bank of Africa. She denied the charges before senior principal magistrate Ellenah Nderitu. THIRTY Seven Chinese accused of operating an illegal telecommunication system were yesterday denied bond for the third time by a Nairobi court. Magistrate Enock Cherono said the suspects are likely to flee the country. The suspects made the application through their lawyer Macharia Nderitu, but it was opposed by prosecutor Duncan Ondimu. CHIEF Justice Willy Mutunga has appointed five judges to determine a case challenging the new security laws within one month. Judges Isaac Lenaola, Mumbi Ngugi, Hillary Chemitei, Hedwig Ong’udi and Joseph Onguto will hear the case filed by Cord. MOTORISTS must drive at 50km near urban centres, the National Transport and Safety Authority said yesterday. NTSA’s chairman Lee Kinyanjui told the Star on the phone yesterday that the authority has put up road signs with speed limits. The authority in September last year warned motorists heading to major urban centres against violating the 50km rule. Father denies kidnapping his baby boy

A 22-year-old casual labourer has denied kidnapping his seven-month old son. Joel Waweru allegedly took the baby from Purity Njeri on December 15 last year after they quarrelled at Kabiria village in Riruta. Njeri is the child’s mother. After the quarrel, she went to her parents home and when she came back for the child, he was not there. Police say Waweru has not said where the baby is. Waweru was released on Sh200,000 bond The case will be heard on May 6.

TNA secretary general Onyango Oloo has defended the secretariat against claims of misusing party funds. Some MPs led by Kieni’s Kanini Kega have asked chairman Johnson Sakaja and Oloo to convene a meeting to discuss the party’s finances. “We have given them a two-week ultimatum to call a meeting failure to which the TNA Parliamentary Group will organise its own retreat and pass the agenda,” Kega said.
