PRESIDENT Uhuru Kenyatta has finally signed the Insurance Amendment Bill 2013 into law after earlier rejecting it following some concerns raised by the industry regulator. Uhuru signed the Bill was signed into law on Wednesday after MPs made some of the proposed changes recommended by the president in December. Munya takes election case to Supreme Court

MERU Governor Peter Munya yesterday moved to the Supreme Court to block his removal from office. Munya whose election was nullified by the Court of Appeal sitting in Nyeri on Wednesday last week wants the court to quash the judgement. The appeal decision was made by judges Alnashir Visram, J Mohammed and Otieno Odek. Burnt school receives help

Well-wishers yesterday raised Sh300,000 for Ainobmoi Boys Secondary School where 64 students lost property in a dormitory fire. Equity Bank donated Sh10,000 and KCB Sh20,000. The county government donated Sh140,000, 64 matresses, mosquito nets and bed sheets. The Kenya Red Cross Society and Vision Kenya were among the well-wishers. The Eldoret Water and Sanitation Company CEO Reuben Tuwei has agreed to be probed over an alleged loss of millions of shillings at the firm. A baby girl drowned and died in a bucket full of water in Mbeere North subcounty yesterday. Esther Murugi, 1 and half, allegedly fell in the bucket as she played with her siblings. Witnesses said Murugi played with her twin sister as their mother washed clothes outside their house at around 8pm in Siakago town. The witness said her playmates raised the alarm prompting their mother to rush into the house. "She found the baby unconcious before she died."

Deputy commissioner of police Leo Nyongesa said arrests and charges will be made against anybody suspected to make unconfirmed utterances on crime. He said security organs have over the years wasted a lot of resources responding to lies. New lab for Kitale clinic

A Sh50 million laboratory at the Kitale District Hospital will be completed soon. Medical superintend Sylvester Mutoro said the World Bank has sponsored the facility. Speaking to the press at the hospital, Mutoro said patients will not be referred to the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret. He said this is a way of transforming the hospital into a referral facility. It serves Trans Nzoia, west pokot, Turkana, south Sudan and western Uganda regions. Mutoro said the emergency and accident unit facility has been completed.

Missing man, found dead

A man who got lost in the forest in Keria village, Kithunguriri location as he and his brother harvested honey last week was found dead. The 53-year-old Patrick Muriithi body was about 30km inside the forest. His brother 55-year-old Emilio Gichovi and some friends remained in the forest for three days before reporting Muriithi's disappearance. Muriithi's body did not have injuries and was moved to Embu Level Five Hospital Mortuary for post-mortem. Tombe Kitutu Masaba MP Timothy Bosire has demanded a complete overhaul of schools’ boards of governors in his constituency for failure to perform. Speaking at Tombe during a meeting on Wednesday, he said most of them are comprised of retirees who cannot offer fresh ideas on institutions’ management. Bosire said young professionals should sit on the boards. “They should be chairing because they are well conversant with the changing education trends and can advise on new paths.” Bosire, however, said he is not downplaying the retirees’ contributions.

A man has killed his 34-year-old brother after in a land row at Makutano village in Suswa, Narok county. Lemeria Sasire killed Kennedy Sasire by hacking him on Wednesday. Area police boss Peterson Maelo said Lemeria was arrested by neighbours after the incident before they handed him to police. He is being held at Narok police station. Maelo said Lemeria will be charged with murder. He asked the residents not to take the law in their hands but instead seek the right procedures to solve domestic conflicts.

THE Kenya Veterinary Board yesterday expressed concern over the high number of veterinary quacks operating in Kisii county. The board said many quacks are operating agro-vet shops without registration. Speaking in Kisii town during an inspection tour of the shops yesterday, chief inspector Idraph Ragwa and senior inspector Risper Orwe said some registered vets are colluding with the quacks to shield them from the law. “Many businesses are not recognised by the board,” Ragwa said. “Some who have registered with the board are giving out their licences to quacks to display them in their shops.”...

Boda boda riders and fishermen in Usigu division of Bondo subcounty are to blame for increased cases of pregnancies among schoolgirls and school dropout in the area, an official has said.
