When Kenyans went to the polls on March 4, hopes were high that the incoming leaders would be different from their predecessors. It was the expectation of the electorate that the new leadership will have the best interests of Kenyans top on its agenda. It is now more than a month since the elections were held and the new leaders have settled in their offices. But to the utter surprise and disbelief of many Kenyans, the new leadership appears more actuated by its own interests than the well being of Kenyans...

Rains have wreaked havoc in game parks

Deputy President William Ruto was quoted as saying that Kenyans have a special way of doing their thing. I certainly concur with him. After such a grueling period of politicking, competition, winning and losing, things seem to have come back to normal all over the country. What is noticeably abnormal is the rains. Rains have been falling much like the El Niño times. But unlike the El Niño, the rains are falling erratically. I had an opportunity to go round the traditional tourist circuit and what I found out was amazing. In Amboseli, the rains have not reached there yet...

Where are the fanatics who could kill for Uhuru or Raila?

I wonder how all those people who spent time feuding over their support for Uhuru Kenyatta or Raila Odinga after the March 9 Supreme Court decision must have felt on Saturday last week when these supposed enemies were seen laughing fit to split their ribs on the State House Nairobi veranda? I've said it before and I'll say it again, ordinary voters have no idea about the agenda of the people they elect and get all fanatical about and those people have very little if any time for you and your hurt feelings...

My dear friend Ngunjiri Wambugu: Allow me to vehemently disagree with you over your recommendation that the International Criminal Court (ICC) cases on Kenya should be withdrawn now that at least 6.1 million Kenya voted for the Jubilee Coalition ticket comprising ICC suspects President Uhuru Kenyatta and Deputy President William Ruto. For if, today, 40 million Kenyans collectively and universally voted that we should immediately commit suicide, should you or I be bound to national hara kiri? Can popular vote or will trump fundamental rights and the human values that undergird any democracy?...

Kenya's Fly In The Soup Challenge

For 50 years, Kenya’s branding challenge has remained remarkably the same: how to diminish - to insignificance - the ugly in the beautiful. Or, to use a more graphic, if somewhat revolting metaphor, how to avoid the ‘fly in the soup’ curse. (By “fly in the soup’ I mean it plainly, not as the usual joke!). The ‘flies in the soup’ in Mzee Jomo Kenyatta’s years were the assasinations of Tom Mboya, Josiah Mwangi Kariuki and others, detentions and tourture, and the seeds of corruption and ethnic division...
